This SA dagger is one of the best we have seen for a while.
The wooden handle has no scratches or dings, and the eagle is tight into the handle, showing no signs of being tampered with with. Being an early dagger (Pre RZM) All the fittings are nickel silver, and are bright and tight to the wood, with very little shrinkage. The lower crossguard is stamped “No” for the Gruppe Nordsee. The blade shows no signs of pitting or rust, and has only light runner marks. The blade is tight into the scabbard, it has not been retipped and has a quantity of cross graining , although this is difficult to photograph. The motto is a deep black etch and crisp, as is the maker mark Wilhelm Weltersbach.
Light scuffs on the anodised scabbard which are to be expected, screws are tight, and have not been touched there is an extremely small ding on the bottom ball. The leather hanger is immaculate, with a piece of tri coloured thread (possibly from a British bugle) attached with a dress hook. This thread has been with the dagger for the best part of 90 years now, sadly we’ll never know the story behind it.
Overall, this is a 1 in 1000 dagger of exceptional quality and rarity, and will be extremely unlikely to find another.
