 Early, non-folding pattern, entrenching tool consists of a hardwood construction handle with an enlarged ball head for ease of handling and a  slightly curved, tooled steel construction shovel head.

The handle is secured to the shovel head by dual extended steel sleeves with flat head retaining rivets.

The obverse extended sleeve is integral to the shovel head while the reverse sleeve is a separate triangular plate that is secured to the shovel head.  Shovel is a very early manufacture with partial markings ‘HERMANN DAN** 1903 ‘. 

It comes with a first pattern  leather construction “opened” entrenching tool carrying case with all leather fittings in good condition, with a functional roller buckle The  black leather early cover has   maker markings of ‘FISCHER,BERLIN ‘ There is a date but very difficult to discern. All stitching firm with no breaks to leather.

This equipment remained  virtually unchanged from 1888 until a closed cover was introduced around 1936-7. It is entirely possible that a WW2 soldier would wear this as well as a WW1 soldier
