With its sharp spike in the centre of its protective dome, the Pickelhaube is one of the most iconic objects produced by Imperial Germany. Soon establishing itself as a symbol for the entire German nation, it was often used by humourists to poke light fun at what were taken to be characteristic German foibles. This is a Prussian Pickelhaube, worn by German military and police forces in the 19th and early 20th centuries. the helmet sports the black, white and red imperial cockade which dates it to post 1897. Original chinstrap affixed to the front and crazing to the leather all over, consistent for an object well over 100 years old. The size is approximately 55, and the leather liner is fragile and cracked – but it is complete, there are faint markings to be had inside the leather and there is a depot stamp on the lip inside, but it is unreadable, as it has worn off The brass plate features the Prussian eagle and the motto "Mit Gott für König und Vaterland" -With God for King and Fatherland. The spike at the top was originally designed to deflect sabre blows. In 1916 it was replaced by the less conspicuous and more practical Stahlhelm
