Field-grey wool construction cap with rabbit fur front, fold down side ear and back panels. Tie-string complete. Quilted rayon liner. Maker marked and size marked 55. Dated for 1942. Heer metal eagle attached to the front identifies it as being owned an officer.
The Russian front in the winter of 1941/42 found the Germans completely unprepared in cold weather garments. The Wehrmacht soon recognized the need for heavier winter clothing; in April 1942 Hitler approved the first winter fur caps were issued that year to all personnel.
