This is an overseas cap for KM personnel “on board ship” It is constructed of a gabardine type material, and not wool, probably a private purchase and near “mint” in condition. The cap has 2 button holes mid way along each side, this would enable the owner to wear it outside with a strap affixed under the chin. The insignia has been hand sewn with a blind stitch at the top of the Adler. On the left side of the cap there is an edelweiss badge – affixed by a pin. The Edelweiss was the favoured emblem of U124 – The inside lining is a blue coloured material ,and there appears to be a stamp mark inside but it is unreadable
This would suggest that it was worn by a member of a U Boat, although I could not possibly swear to that, although it is probable.
The Edelweiss emblem of U-124 came from the loss of U-64 in April 1940. The two boats had the same crew for the most part, including the commander, Kptlt. Wilhelm Schulz. They were saved from the cold Norwegian waters by members of the German mountain troops, whose unit badge is an Edelweiss. The grateful U-boat men adopted the emblem on their next U-boat, U-124, commissioned in June 1940.
